Songs by Signs

...
Taking up the tag Jeff left me I've decided to do something different with the song theme. I'm going to combine two loves of mine - music and Chinese astrology. I've picked songs or musicians I love, but made it more of a challenge by also finding ones with lyrics that fit each sign as well as being written/performed by musicians from that sign. (whew!)

Rat - Intelligent, charming, ambitious, hard-working and hyperactive. Think Mickey Mouse combined with Bill Gates. Rats are born to achieve. Famous Rats: Andrew Lloyd Webber, Cat Stevens, Donna Summer, Grace Jones, Katie Melua, Kim Wilde, Mick Hucknall, Olivia Newton-John.

My song choice is "So Beautiful" by Mick Hucknal/Simply Red

I was listening to this conversation
Noticing my daydream stimulated me more
I was crumbling with anticipation
You'd better send me home before I tumble down to the floor

You're so beautiful but oh so boring
I'm wondering what am I doing here
So beautiful but oh so boring, I'm wondering
If anyone out there really cares

Ox (also called Buffalo) - Patient, persistent, clear-thinking, stubborn and powerful. The original "immovable object." Oxen are born hard-workers. Famous Oxen: Jon Bon Jovi, Sammy Davis Jr, Bruce Springsteen

My song choice is "Dancing in the Dark" by Bruce Springsteen

I get up in the evening
and I ain't got nothing to say
I come home in the morning
I go to bed feeling the same way
I ain't nothing but tired
Man I'm just tired and bored with myself
Hey there baby, I could use just a little help

You can't start a fire without a spark
This gun's for hire
even if we're just dancing in the dark

Tiger - Courageous, charismatic, Impulsive, generous and persuasive. All Tigers are Tigger at heart. Tigers are born to rebel. Famous Tigers: Roberta Flack, Lionel Ritchie, Kenny Rogers, Stevie Wonder, Robbie Williams

My song choice is "No Regrets" by Robbie Williams

I didn't lose my mind it was
Mine to give away
Couldn't stay to watch me cry
You didn't have the time
So I softly slip away...

No regrets they don't work
No regrets they only hurt
Sing me a love song
Drop me a line
Suppose it's just a point of view
But they tell me I'm doing fine

Rabbit (also called Cat) - Diplomatic, intuitive, friendly, sensitive and peace-loving. Like Brer Rabbit, they can be cunning. Rabbits are born to adapt. Famous Rabbits: Seal, Phil Collins, Harry Belafonte, Whitney Houston, Julian Lennon, Neil Simon, Dusty Springfield, Sting

My song choice is "Englishman in New York" by Sting

Takes more than combat gear to make a man
Takes more than license for a gun
Confront your enemies, avoid them when you can
A gentleman will walk but never run

If manners maketh man as someone said
Then he's the hero of the day
It takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile
Be yourself no matter what they say

Dragon - Fearless, irresistible, idealistic, and self-sufficient. Dragons think they can conquer the world. Dragons are born to blaze ahead. Famous Dragons: Count Basie, Bing Crosby, Neil Diamond, Placido Domingo, Tom Jones, John Lennon, Cliff Richard, Ringo Starr,

My song choice is "Forever in Blue Jeans" by Neil Diamond

Money talks
But it don't sing and dance
And it cant walk
As long as I can have you here with me
Id much rather be
Forever in blue jeans

Snake - Sophisticated, sensual, wise, efficient and self-contained. Mesmerising and unique. Snakes are born to charm. Famous Snakes: Bob Dylan, Paul Simon AND Art Garfunkel, , Dean Martin, Dionne Warwick, Shania Twain.

My song choice is "The Sound of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkle

Hello darkness, my old friend,
I've come to talk with you again,
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping,
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence.

Horse - Cheerful, noble, energetic, unselfish and temperamental. Think of the wild mustangs of America. Horses are born to be free. Famous horses: Barbara Streisand, Paul McCartney, Chopin. Ella Fitzgerald, Bob Geldof, Jimi Hendrix, Janet Jackson, Nelly Furtado

My song choice is "I'm like a Bird" by Nellie Furtado
I'm like a bird, I'll only fly away
I don't know where my soul is,
I don't know where my home is
All I need for you to know is
I'm like a bird, I'll only fly away

Your faith in me brings me to tears
Even after all these years
And it pains me so much to tell
That you don't know me that well

Goat (also called Sheep) - Creative, peaceful, imaginative, eccentric and disorganised. The "arty" types. Goats are born to be creative. Famous Goats: Mick Jagger, John Denver, Julio Englesias,

My song choice is "Rocky Mountain High" by John Denver

He climbed cathedral mountains, he saw silver clouds below,
he saw everything as far as you can see.
And they say that he got crazy once and he tried to touch the sun,
and he lost a friend, but kept the memory.
Now he walks in quiet solitude, the forest and the streams,
seeking grace in every step he takes.
His sight is turned inside himself, to try and understand
the serenity of a clear blue mountain lake.

And the Colorado Rocky Mountain high,
I've seen it raining fire in the sky.
I know he'd be a poor man if he never saw an eagle fly,
Rocky Mountain high..

Monkey - Entertaining, likeable, witty, and resourceful. These people ARE the barrel full of monkeys! Monkeys are born to scheme. Famous Monkeys: Shaggy, Johnny Cash, Diana Ross, Rod Stewart, Kiri Te Kanawa. Christina Aguilera, Will Smith, Celine Dion, Kylie Minogue.

My song choice is "Let's Talk about love" by Celine Dion

Everywhere I go all the places that I've been
Every smile is a new horizon on a land I've never seen
There are people around the world - different faces different names
But there's one true emotion that reminds me we're the same...
Lets talk about love

Rooster (also called Chicken or Bird) - Honest, flamboyant, generous, thoughtless and critical. From the proud peacock to the strutting cockerel, Roosters are born to survive. Famous Roosters: Wagner, Strauss, Natasha Bedingfield, Bob Marley, Jennifer Lopez, Josh Groban, Eric Clapton, Bette Midler, Van Morrison, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton,

My song choice is "Unwritten" by Natasha Bedingfield

Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten

Oh, oh, oh
I break tradition, sometimes my tries, are outside the lines
We've been conditioned to not make mistakes, but I can't live that way

Dog - Loyal, idealistic, individualistic, faithful yet wary. Dogs are champions of the weak. Dogs are born to protect. Famous Dogs: Cher, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, Kate Bush, Madonna, Liza Minnelli, Prince, Sade

My song choice is "Starman" by David Bowie

There's a starman waiting in the sky
He'd like to come and meet us
But he thinks he'd blow our minds
There's a starman waiting in the sky
He's told us not to blow it
Cause he knows its all worthwhile

Pig (also called Boar) - Cultured, determined, trusting and kind-hearted. Sometimes excessive, Pigs are born to want the good things in life. Famous Pigs: Ali Campbell of UB40, Mika, Bryan Adams, Elton John, Jerry Lee Lewis, Marie Osmond.

My choice is "Bring me your Cup" by UB40

I've got the bottle, bring me your cup
Pop the cork, and try a sup
And when you're empty, Ill fill you up
Well drink it down till the sun comes up

I forgot the rules!
1. Each person who wants to join in has to write about
5-10 songs that had an impact on them in their life.
2. They should link back to me as well as Jeff.
(his link is in his name here or on the left under psychosomatic wit)
3. Then, if so inclined, tag one to five more people.

I am tagging two people:
Twilight
Betty
...

  3. Wow, Michelle; I don't think I ever really understood Chinese astrological signs before. I'm going to actually use this as a reference in the future! This Ox thanks you!

  4. Hi Blur

    Oooh, you're a Snake? How exotic. :-)

Isn't it amazing that both S and G are Snakes? No wonder they wrote such great music.

    Hi Amel
I'm glad you enjoyed that. My song choice for Horse is one of my favourites.

    Hi Jeff L
I'm so thrilled to hear you enjoyed my post. I love Chinese astrology! I must write a few more posts on it.

  5. Great choices of song, Michelle !
I'm a Tiger (Chinese astrologically speaking) - that's good song for us!

Thank you for the tag (it's the first time for me!) I'll enjoy it a lot. I'm away to sort out my songs right now.

  7. Oh, dear...I only picked 4 songs. Can I borrow Sounds of Silence? I forgot - that was college days for me. We were sooooo relevant back in the sixties, ya know. :o) Flowers in my hair, bare feet, peasant dress...*sigh*

  8. Very original post Michelle! - from an artistic and eccentric Goat (I'd rather be called a goat than a sheep).
You know who is a Snake!
I just hope she doesn't poison me with her bite! ;)

  10. I'm a Rat, btw. *evil grin*

Lots of Rats around lately. Just saw Remy in Ratatouille the other night and just finished a book with a Rat in it named Stanley - a Messenger Rat.

Hmmm...*Betty goes off to re-read Rat Medicine*

  11. Not true of all rats. Just as not all rats are true. Much posturing, though.

Thanks! There are so many songs I like I figured I needed a theme or I'd be wandering all over theplace. come to think of it.. I still wandered all over the place! But I didhave fun doing it. :-)

    Twilight
Glad you enjoyed your song choice, and being tagged.
    :-)

    Hi Jeff and Holly
Both Dragons! :-) Nice year to be born. Dragons are winners because they have tough skin, but soft hearts.

    ---
    Betty
I loved your list of songs. I'm so glad you're back blogging. :-) I'm looking forward to seeing that movie, BTW.

    ---
    Epi
Yeah, I don't blame you. Who'd want to be a sheep? Much nicer to be a wild goat leaping about mountain tops. Can't help thinking about the fact goats eat anything and a certain baby goat whacking grandpa on the head for food.. *grin*

I'm not surprised you fell for a Snake. Snakes might get bad revues in European myths, but in the East they are "the" sign for glamour and charisma. It's virtually impossible not to be charmed by a Snake.

    Ron
You telling the truth, not, or just posturing? ;-)

Well, I've met Rats I've liked, and some I haven't, but I've never met a Rat that didn't stand out from the crowd!

  13. I'm gonna go find it! Thanks for the recommendation
