A Tall Ship

There was a tall ship in our local harbour last week. It was a brigantine, from Holland. :) I took lots of photos and then we walked out onto the harbour wall and I took photos of the coast line. I'll publish those in the next few days.

 It reminded me of the poem by John Mansfield...

Sea Fever

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking.

I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull's way and the whale's way, where the wind's like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over.

  1. I love tall ships! I used to make models of them when I was a kid. I toured one when I last visited Baltimore. I would enjoy sailing on one.

  2. Beautiful shots! Can't wait to see more. Brigantine is the name of a city near me at the shore.

    I sailed on a tall ship, Meerwald, twice. It was magical!

  3. LOVE the pics. My fave's the first one. :-D

    Unfortunately I have a really bad sea sickness. Though I'm tempted to try going on a cruise ship or something like that, I dare not. :-((((

    I made a ship model when I was a teen. Then I started a model of an ancient Greek ship, but the rigging was too darn fiddly and I never finished it.

    Hi Em
    Ohh wow. That must have been thrilling. But like Amel (hi Amel! :D ) I suffer with motion sickness so i'm not sure i'd like to try it for real. I feel ill on swings. LOL

  5. That's really beautiful. Something very pristine about that photo. I would love to sail around the world aboard that ship.
